Alibaba vs sourcing agent is one of the first choices a buyer faces when importing from China. Should you search and order yourself on Alibaba, look at the domestic platform 1688, or work with someone on the ground who finds and checks suppliers for you? There is no single right answer. Each route suits a different kind of buyer, order and level of experience. This article explains how the options work, where each one is strong, and how to decide.
Alibaba: the international B2B platform
Alibaba.com is a business-to-business marketplace aimed at international buyers. Suppliers, both factories and trading companies, list products with prices, minimum order quantities and descriptions in English.
Where Alibaba works well
- Discovery. It is an easy way to see what is available, typical specifications and the range of suppliers for a product.
- Communication in English. Sellers on Alibaba are used to working with foreign buyers.
- Platform tools. Alibaba offers order and payment features and some forms of trade protection, with conditions set by the platform.
- Standard products. For items that are already made in large numbers, ordering online can be straightforward.
Where Alibaba gets harder
- Who is behind a listing. The same photos can appear on many shops. Some sellers present themselves as factories when they are traders.
- Comparing quotes. Listed prices are often ranges, and the final price depends on specification, quantity and packaging.
- Quality control. The platform does not check your goods before shipment. Inspection is still your responsibility.
- Mixed orders. Buying many different items from many sellers means many conversations, many payments and goods arriving at different places.
1688: the domestic Chinese platform
1688.com is Alibaba Group’s platform for the domestic Chinese market. Many factories and wholesalers list there, often with prices aimed at local buyers.
Using 1688 directly is more difficult for foreign buyers:
- the interface and communication are in Chinese;
- sellers usually expect domestic payment methods and delivery to an address in China;
- many sellers are not set up for export paperwork.
This is why a 1688 sourcing agent is a common solution: someone in China who searches the platform, contacts sellers, places orders, receives the goods at a warehouse and arranges export. Prices on 1688 can look attractive, but the full cost also includes domestic delivery, checks, consolidation, export handling and international shipping.
What a sourcing agent does
A sourcing agent, or sourcing partner, works on your behalf in China. Instead of offering a catalogue, the agent starts from your product and looks for suppliers who can make or supply it. Depending on the agent, the work can include:
- Product search across online platforms, markets and factories.
- Supplier and factory research: checking business licences, factory vs trader, production evidence.
- Price and terms negotiation: MOQ, payment terms, production time, packaging.
- Sample coordination and comparison between suppliers.
- Quality inspection before shipment.
- Consolidation and logistics coordination with freight forwarders.
The value of an agent is not access to secret suppliers. It is time, local presence and someone checking things you cannot see from abroad.
Alibaba vs sourcing agent: side-by-side
| Question | Ordering on Alibaba yourself | Working with a sourcing agent |
|---|---|---|
| Who finds suppliers? | You, through search and messages | The agent, based on your specification |
| Who checks the supplier? | You, mostly from documents and listings | The agent, including on-site checks if needed |
| Access to 1688 and local markets | Limited | Usually part of the search |
| Quality inspection | You arrange it separately | Usually coordinated by the agent |
| Mixed orders from many suppliers | Many separate orders and shipments | Goods can be consolidated in China |
| Your time and control | More time, direct control | Less time, decisions still yours |
| Cost | Platform prices, plus your own time and any inspection | Agent fee or commission, agreed upfront |
How to choose
Start from your order, not from the channel.
Ordering on Alibaba yourself often makes sense when:
- you need one or a few standard products;
- you have time to compare suppliers and manage communication;
- you are comfortable arranging samples, inspection and shipping yourself.
A sourcing agent often makes sense when:
- you need many different products from different suppliers;
- you want to buy from 1688 or from markets such as Yiwu;
- you need a custom or modified product and want factories checked;
- you cannot easily travel to China, or you want someone to see the goods before they ship.
Look at the total cost, not only the unit price
Whichever route you choose, compare the full cost of the order. Besides the product price, this can include sample costs, domestic delivery inside China, inspection, consolidation, export handling, international freight, import duties and taxes, and the cost of your own time. A lower unit price on one platform can disappear once these are added, and the reverse can also be true.

Many buyers use both: they research on Alibaba to understand the product and price levels, then work with an agent to check suppliers and follow up the order. If you are new to importing, our guide on how to import from China shows how these steps fit together.
Choosing a good sourcing agent
Not all agents work the same way. Before you start, ask:
- How is the agent paid? A clear service fee or commission, agreed in writing, is easier to understand than hidden margins on the product price.
- Will you see the supplier’s details? Transparency about who makes your goods helps you make better decisions.
- What exactly is included? Search, verification, negotiation, inspection and logistics coordination are different tasks.
- Where is the team? Being physically near suppliers makes visits and checks practical.
At TOPDANBAZ, our team is based in Yiwu. We are a sourcing and procurement partner, not a marketplace and not a cargo company: we search, check and follow up suppliers for the product you need, and coordinate with logistics providers. You can read the process on our how it works page, and our article on China supplier verification explains the checks in detail.
FAQ
Is a sourcing agent more expensive than Alibaba?
An agent adds a fee, but it can also save on inspection problems, wrong orders and time. Compare the total cost of the order, not only the unit price.
Can a sourcing agent buy from 1688 for me?
Many agents do. A 1688 sourcing agent places orders with domestic sellers, receives goods in China, checks them and arranges export.
Can I still use Alibaba if I work with an agent?
Yes. You can share Alibaba listings with your agent as a starting point. The agent can check those suppliers and compare them with other options.
Does a sourcing agent guarantee quality?
No honest agent can guarantee a supplier’s work. What an agent can do is check suppliers, compare samples and inspect goods before shipment, so problems are found earlier.
